This is a children's story about Saint Valentine, in French. You can use it to teach the children about the conditions that were endured by the roman soldiers at that time. Service could last up to 25 years and many longed to go home, settle down and start a family. This was also a period when Christianity was still not always tolerated! There are many stories about Saint Valentine, who he was and what happened. This is one version. Also, there is no evidence to suggest that he was crucified although crucifixion was regularly used as a form of execution against the Christians at that time. The story is produced by www.growstorygrow.com Here are some questions you could ask the children. 1. What regions were part of the Roman Empire at this time? (Most of Europe and part of Asia and Africa.) 2. Why was the emperor worried? (He was worried because the soldiers were becoming restless and wanted to marry.) 3. What did the emperor do? (He made a law banning all marriages.) 4. Why was the bishop Valentine sad? (He felt that the soldiers should be able to marry if they wanted to.) 5. What did he do? (He carried out marriage ceremonies.) 6. Why was he put into prison? (Because he refused to pray to the Gods of Rome and continued to marry soldiers.) 7. Who did he meet in prison? (The jailor's daughter.) 8. What was the miracle? (The jailor's daughter was blind and now she could see.) 9. What did he write the night before he was executed? (A love letter to the jailor's daughter.) 10. How was he executed? (He was crucified.)
