I think that he's saying that he was honestly just trying to help Harry to feel like he had done his part, but that he should leave it to the Aurors/Order to take care of the Death Eaters

May 15, 2012 - It wasn't a mistake, because Harry is constantly compared to his father. Harry looks up to him, and hes always been a model for him to live for. Sirius was complementing him the best way he knew how by calling him by his middle name James.

And besides, if he were in the heat of a duel like that, he wouldn't have time to think about complimenting harry in such a manor, it makes far more sense that he would be remembering the times when he fought alongside James. And calling Harry "James" really isn't a sincere compliment; not the sort of thing Sirius would do. He would call him Harry because that's who he is, Harry isn't James.
