Seen at Kidderpore is a modern tram-car operated by Calcutta Tramways Company (CTC) on Route 36 coming from Esplanade, while its older counterpart prepares for a run toward Esplanade from the Tram Shed at Kidderpore - a distance of 5 km, on Jan 29, 2012. Calcutta (Kolkata) remains the only city in India where trams still ply, as this mode of transport was phased out from Delhi, Bombay and Madras several decades ago. Many routes in the city have already been closed forever, due to expansion work on the Metro railway, and construction of flyovers on the roads. Near Howrah Bridge (Rabindra Setu) and environs, the tram-tracks remain as a mute sign of their past glory. The Tram lends an old world charm and add to the romantic element. This slow moving electrical reptile in narrow and crowded streets completes the ultimate attraction of the city of Calcutta.
