Tony's Dashcam - Big 4x4 trying to merge in a small gap #174

Dodany: Feb 7, 2012

Od: t1sutton

Czas: 1:2

For some reasons, this big 4x4 was trying to merge into a small gap between my car and the car in front, plus my "safe distance" gap. I have no idea why they were attempting to do then when there are no cars behind me! Yet this 4x4 overtook me slowly and tried this move. You can see the markers, showing you that I have not slowed down, nor sped up. And thankfully the driver decided it was a bad idea and merged behind me. ======================================= As always, almost all of your questions can be found on my FAQ page - http://www.dashcamvideo.co.uk/faq Camera used: MiniDVR HD - http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/minidvr-hd-bullet-camera.html Use the Promotional Code of HTDC05, you will get 10% off from the price.

Feb 7, 2012 - did he come off at the junction?

t1sutton Wypowiedź:

Feb 7, 2012 - There is an junction coming up to get off the A47 and the 4x4 have been on the 2nd lane for a while, just moving behind me before doing this move.

Feb 7, 2012 - Strange, I'm surprised he didn't just cut in to be honest.

t1sutton Wypowiedź:

Feb 7, 2012 - I think the 4x4 driver realised there is no room to cut in... which is a good thing, otherwise they would not have left me with a safe gap!

MattLoaf92 Wypowiedź:

Feb 7, 2012 - Happens a lot here as it's largely A roads with limited overtaking space so it's not unusual for people to cut in but there's not much else they can do most times so I just let it slide. I've had the police do it to me though and that pissed me off as I was already doing 60, the idiot was just in a rush as another marked car caught up after the traffic slowed down and he just followed along at a safe distance.

Feb 7, 2012 - Yeah pointless move

Feb 7, 2012 - Lack of forward planning. At least he didn't cut in.

NastyLiar Wypowiedź:

Feb 7, 2012 - Hmm, didn't forward plan but seems like a decent driver since they indicated their intention and waited to see if you'd pull back (instead of moving straight over). Realising that this wasn't going to happen they slowed to pull in behind you. If only more drivers would do this!

Feb 7, 2012 - where I live they wouldnt care and still barge in even with only one car length I see it happen quite often but im glad im not on the freeway much but still happens on regular streets too! gets my blood boiling because most of the time when they move they slow down!

Feb 8, 2012 - At least the 4x4 driver eventually saw sense and backed off. Heading into Norwich on the A146 Trowse bypass last Saturday afteroon I had an 07 reg VW Golf squeeze in front of me. I left about the same braking distance as you did. I flashed my lights at him to communicate my displeasure!

Mar 10, 2012 - In the United States, that is more than enough space for a car to merge in. After the car merges in, you can always slow down to create another safe gap. Sorry, I'm not an English driver so I am 100% sure what is the trouble here.

t1sutton Wypowiedź:

Mar 10, 2012 - If you read the description, I mentioned about the "safe distance" gap in case the car in front brakes hard. It's also mentioned in the UK Highway Code. You leave a much bigger gap if in fog or rain as you brakes longer in these conditions.

t1sutton Wypowiedź:

Mar 10, 2012 - And for why did I not slow down, why should I? There's nothing behind me and the driver was trying to be cheeky. At least the driver saw sense and made her decsions herself without me doing anything.

GusErlangga Wypowiedź:

Mar 10, 2012 - Dammit. I meant I am NOT 100% sure what is the trouble here. Anyway, just a simple road courtesy will be nice by slowing down a bit when a car is trying to merge in between you and the car in front of you. It won't hurt being back by a few metres, right?

Mar 14, 2012 - In the UK you are meant to leave at least a two second gap in dry conditions and depending on the road surface, however in wet conditions this should be increased to at least 4. I usually leave 3-4 for dry and about 6-8 for wet.

Mar 21, 2012 - It is the typical story of UNTRAINED 4X4 DRIVERS, yes I do believe that drivers of 4x4s should receive advanced driver training( I was trained by the military); and she/he was obviously driving on the weight of the vehicle. If any serious bad driving happened in front of me; the taped sequence would be date stamped and passed to Norfolk Police. Without any hesitation. Keep up the great videos, I hope you pass them on??? :-))
