UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon reportedly advised Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas that reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas should not be achieved at the expense of negotiations with Israel. The comments came after Abbas and Hamas leader Khaled Mashal signed an agreement that may lead to a unity government despite the fact that Hamas is designated as a terrorist organisation by both the European Union and the United States. The secretary-general's comments seem to differ with those of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who says Abbas must choose between a pact with Hamas or peace with Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu gave this statement, "Hamas is a terror organisation which strives to destroy the state of Israel and is supported by Iran. I have said many times in the past that the Palestinian Authority must decide between a pact with Hamas and peace with Israel. Hamas and peace do not go together. Therefore I am telling Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas]: You can't hold the stick from both ends, it's either a pact with Hamas or peace with Israel. You can't have them both." Fatah and Hamas have been bitter rivals since Hamas seized control of Gaza in 2007 and expelled Abbas' Fatah-led Palestinian Authority. The unification of the Palestinian factions comes as recent peace talks between Palestinians and Israelis proved fruitless, and Abbas appears to have concluded that he has a better chance of repairing the internal troubles of the Palestinians than reaching an agreement with Israel.
