www.bbc.co.uk/markkermode The Woman In Black is an old-fashioned ghost story that aims to scare you through suggestion rather than special effects. Seeing the film made me think about my most spine chilling moment in cinema - what is yours?

Feb 16, 2012 - OK, what's scary is only having 500 "characters"! I saw A Woman in Black tonight, great but in a childish, oo oo(5 characters, I'll delete one at the end if need be) I'll cut to the chase. I NEED to know what a film is called, it scared the living crap out of me when I was a child back in the 60's and my parents let me stay up and watch it!!? It has Ray Milland in it, there's crying sounds in the night, waves crashing, books flipping their pages and best of all misty ghosts! Chill factor 10. xx

Feb 16, 2012 - So hard to choose...well, the Thing (1982 of course) was generally chilling, Suspiria is a generally horrific and intense film as well without being consistently violent (though when it's violent it's really violent),

Feb 16, 2012 - though I think Mark you have the right idea with Asian horror...there are some very scary moments in Ring - the bit that really chilled me is when they descend down the well and look up, when there is a sudden chilling flashback POV of the Dr looking down the well at Sadako...Pulse has some very creepy moments too, like when he enters the room with red tape at the end and sees the ghost...

Feb 16, 2012 - for me though, this is obscure, but the ultimate Asian horror chill moment is the finale of Japanese mockumentary horror Noroi - the Curse...it's something very brief the director sees that makes you do a double take yourself, I won't spoil it but if you have seen it you should know what I am talking about

Feb 17, 2012 - The shot of the child running his finger across his throat towards the end of Schindler's List. The women are on the way to Auschwitz but we dont know that yet. when we see it a second time just slightly slowed down it always sends a shiver down my spine

Feb 17, 2012 - "It ought to be burnt down and the ground sown with salt.." a very serious Russ Tamblyn near the end of The Haunting, who had now lost his joviality, his happy-go-lucky 'cool', and holding his coat collar tight around his neck, stares at Hill House.

Feb 17, 2012 - I think one of the most chilling is in a film you mentioned. It's the bit near the end of The Orphanage when the mother discovers what happened to her son. It's that gradual realisation of what actually happened that absolutely chills me when I think of it.

Feb 18, 2012 - Winkys Scene from Mullholland Drive always chills me. The moment the monster comes around the corner, its the most perfect climax to a great scene

Feb 19, 2012 - When I was a kid I used to find the Predator whispering 'Anytime' to be bone-chilling.

Feb 20, 2012 - The Haunting, the original that is, this film is almost pure atmosphere and it's so unrelenting that even though very little is happening you are constantly on edge, a fine achievement for a horror film that came out such a long time ago

Feb 20, 2012 - The fridge scene in Ghostbusters is creepy. Seriously!

Feb 21, 2012 - Most of E.T. always scared me, and I refuse to watch Pinocchio. Ringu 0 comes to mind when Sadako turns into her stringy-haired self and the following ten minute scene chilled me, since I knew sooner or later she would turn evil and when it came it was scary.

Feb 21, 2012 - There's a scene in Fanny and Alexander where some children are awakened in the middle of the night by their mother's screaming as she looks at her husband in his casket. That always unsettled me if only because it perfectly embodies existentialist despair in a way everyone can understand and relate to.

Feb 22, 2012 - The most frightening thing I've personally watched is in 'The Shining'. A tight shot of Danny playing with his trucks, when suddenly, and very gently, a tennis ball rolls in between his toys. The next cut is a wideshot, from behind Danny, showing a long corridor stretching way out in front of him and his toys, with absolutely no one there...chills me thinking about it. The implication that something was there, waiting, playing, is absolutely horrible.

Feb 22, 2012 - The end of Blow Out when Travolta's character finally finds the right scream to dub the movie with, and it's the real scream of his murdered girlfriend.

Feb 23, 2012 - For me, it's that moment in multiple horror films, when a pair of eyes appear out of pitch black darkness. Always unexpected and always gives me full on chills.

Mar 23, 2012 - The scene in Sixth Sense where Cole is hiding form the ghost who died because her mother poisoned her that gives me chills every time! I had nightmares for weeks afterward!

Mar 24, 2012 - From what you've described, I think the film you saw was called 'The Uninvited' (1944). The DVD of this film is being released -after being on VHS for so long- in May of this year.apparently. It's hard to be sure that's the film you mean, as Ray Milland did a number of sci-fi thriller/horror movies ('Dial M For Murder' being a classic one). but I hope that helps! :)

Mar 31, 2012 - Watching Synecdoche New York again and hearing the little girl sing at the very start. As chilling as little girls singing in movies have been, this is chilling for such different reasons. Hearing how happy she is and her unbelievably cute speech impediment adds such weight to her tragic life and why Phillip Seymour Hoffman's character views it as such.

Apr 24, 2012 - For me the bit in The Exorcist when Reagan repeats what the homeless man says. Chilling.

Feb 15, 2012 - Or how about just the entirety of Return to Oz.... Even the sound of Tik Tok walking does me in. Let alone the Wheelers and creepy Scarecrow, in fact the whole film is a bit of a nightmare. Though in its own way a masterpiece (for those of a certain generation).
