GCSE group recreating Rutherford's famous experiment (1911) that led to the discovery of the atomic nucleus. Here, the atom is represented by the circle and you have to imagine you have no idea there is a measuring cylinder (nucleus) in the middle. The measuring cylinder and its diameter are 'discovered' by bombardment with balls (alpha particles). Most miss, telling us that the atom is mostly empty space, A few a deflected and this reveals that the atom has a nucleus and it is very small.
