Meditation and Healing by http://centerofintention.com or call 480-582-3374. Meditation is simply a discipline or a process of turning your mind inward and having it focus - I'm going to say focus - on one thing. So you turn the mind inward and you focus on one thing. There are many different techniques for doing that and there are many different purposes for doing it. So I'm not going to say too much about the techniques for the moment, but because it's the purposes that generally determine what kind of techniques are the best. So in our culture, most often people turn to meditation because they want to de-stress. They want to relax. That is probably the commonest purpose for meditation. I totally support that and I believe in it. I think everybody can benefit from meditation if you live in our fast paced society. If you're a person whose mind races, if you're a person who experiences anxiety, absolutely even more the case. I also often encourage my clients to do what I call mindfulness meditation, and that's the meditation that's out on my website. And if you've listened to it, which I don't know if you have, but that particular meditation takes a person's attention inward, into the body. And the purpose of that is to really get the individual centered inside their own physical presence and their own body. And then it's possible to expand your awareness to include your feelings, your memories, and even if you open your eyes to include the physical environment, to include what you hear. So starting from inside the body you can increase your level of awareness of consciousness, just not only of yourself and what you're thinking and feeling, but also of the world around you. Whatever kind of philosophical background people have, whatever they believe we came from or why we're here and where we're headed, I personally believe we're in a physical body, we're having a physical experience and that's our job, is to really be here and experience the world. And so that particular type of mindfulness meditation is very powerful for centering yourself and for finding out more about who you are. So that's why I emphasize it a great deal. And then a couple of other purposes of meditation. Some people meditate for spiritual ecstasy. And then it's also possible to do what's called contemplative meditation, to have insight into maybe a piece of text or insight into a situation. So that also is a specialized form. But most people are doing one of the first two. They're either meditating for relaxation or they're meditating for greater self awareness. Both of those types of meditation I would say support healing. They support healing in the body and in the emotions. And then you said to me, "Well, what are the benefits of meditation?" Okay, and then, "How do we do it at home?" So let's talk for a minute about the benefits of meditation. I said a couple of them already. I think it helps people relax. For a lot of people it's a great way to go to sleep. Some people it wakes them up, but a lot of people it's a great way to relax. One way or the other it very likely could help you sleep better. Help people be calmer, help them be more creative. If you're calmer you're less likely to - what do I want to say - have spontaneous outbursts. You're more likely to have good relationships. So it can enhance relationships. It also, absolutely I will assert, that meditation over time will enhance intuition. So people have a far greater intuitive sense about what they should do, how to do it and so on to make life easy. And as I said before, also it's a wonderful tool for getting to know yourself. So in terms of self exploration or self examination, it's absolutely great. It's great if you want to take on a change in lifestyle, to go from being a heavy type-A person to one that maybe is a little more relaxed and laid back. So those are some of the things that occur to me about the benefits of meditation. I don't think you can do it wrong. My encouragement to people is just do it. People will come to me about meditation. I'll ask them, "Do you meditate?" They'll say, "Well, I've tried but my mind keeps racing. I can't stop my mind so I can't meditate." My response to that is, "That's not what you should worry about. You don't have to stop your mind to meditate. Meditate and the purpose of meditation is to meditate. Don't worry about what your mind is doing. If your mind wanders 60 times in a five minute meditation, you just come back 61 times. That's all. It isn't about you stopping your mind in order to meditate." So that's why I say you can't do it wrong.
