How to start a big induction motor from the domestic mains - one idea

Here is shown the starting process of a 20 HP 3 phase 2 pole bulgarian induction motor (ЗАЕ Пловдив) from 1 phase 50 Hz 25 A max. mains. Two air heaters are used as a reostat and a capacitance of 125 microfarads is used as the starting capacitance, and after reaching about 2800 rpm half of it is switched off. After the nominal rpm is achieved, a short circuit bypass is connected in paralel to the resistors (the air heaters), thus completing the connection of the motor to the mains.

Sep 28, 2011 - This motor was made in Bulgaria before about 40 years. It's power is 20 HP with an energy efficiency of 93.7 % and power factor of 0.921, 2910 rpm at 50 Hz.
