Cheryl Gallant (MP) takes note in detail of how the Firearms Act violates the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and violates constitutional rights. The opposition's questions that follow are more of a temper-tantrum then an actual rebuttal, in classic anti-gun style. Also, a reference is made again to the support that the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police and their support for the long gun registry. Correct me if I am wrong, but are these guys not part of the Coalition for Gun Control, a political lobby group hell bent on disarming Canadian citizens? I'd take the word of front line cops over a politically motivated lobby group any day. FANTASTIC presentation MP Cheryl Gallant and thank you for pointing out how hunters and sport shooters are "criminalized" by the Firearms Act in every sense of the word. PS: IF you are going to vote this down you should state why (please)- if you think she is a liar it is EASY to prove. Simply consult the specific parts of the Firearms Act that she makes reference to and READ it, then reply here with your findings. Do more than the opposition did, do more than simply express your disapproval without looking at her findings. Feb 10, 2012 - I was thinking that the other day. I wanted to go rabbit hunting but was too lazy to go because of all the work getting the long gun out...now If I had a little .22cal handgun I could shove it in my pocket and go. At the gun club we had a target competition with .22cal handguns and can hit apple sized targets at 25M. Rabbits are larger and tend to sit nice and still at ranges far far closer (5-20 feet). Would make a great hunting firearm- .22cal handgun.

Feb 14, 2012 - The RCMP should not have the right to seize without compensation. There should be full compensation for whatever firearm is seized, full retail price + taxes. Because if that were the case, they would think very very carefully about what long guns the decide to "reclassify" as the compensation for the seized firearms would cost them a large sum.

If you want someone's property you pay what they paid, you pay the taxes on it too, and if you make it illegal to own then you also need to buy all the things that become useless when the gun is now newly illegal- so buy their ammo, buy their new gun stocks, custom gun gear........all of it.

Feb 25, 2012 - Good speech but I think the Conservatives are still being cowardly. The argument to end the long gun registry still applies to handguns or should I say restricted weapons. The registries are just one of the problems with firearms legislation. The RCMP shouldn't have any power in classification of firearms. There needs to be objective standards and only civilians can overrule those. The RCMP is drunk with power in this matter..
