Baltusrol Impressions, Part II: A Child's Sojourn - an improvisation for Accordion

This is Part Two of the recently posted improvisation celebrating childhood in Springfield, New Jersey. The impressionistic nature of this piece recalls the forest environment, the meandering stream, the impressive waterfalls and formidable rock formations which once stood at the western end of Baltusrol Avenue. These natural features were obliterated with the construction of Route 24, when the widening of the super highway and new alignment engineering permanently altered this once lovely landscape. Most of my memories of this area probably stem from visits beginning in 1955 through the mid-Sixties, when the last time I saw this place may have been around 1965. In this musical improvisation I am remembering the delights to both the eye and the ear as we explored the natural elements and investigated the splendors of the forest. Today, unfortunately, there are virtually no areas left of this once vast environment. The music begins with a wistful remembrance of the size and extent of the forest, with the first theme appearing around 00:25, and an intimation of entering the forest at 00:30. There are impressions of dancing in the sunlight, with the main theme at 00:53 suggesting the opening of natural doors or windows to allow in light and air. There is a hint of dance at 1:33, and a palpable feeling of cold rocks at 1:57, where once we climbed in the summer and then gazed at the frozen waterfalls in the winter. A theme of the playfulness of children occurs at 2:09, and the solidity of the rocks is suggested at 2:22. The playful theme continues at 2:27 and suggests the eventual passage of time from early morning until late afternoon, where the dispensation of the day enters a change of form through altered states of light. At 3:21 there is a brief quote of the famous French song "Frere Jacques," which fades to obscurity. Rolling waters are suggested at 3:52, and the love of children seems to become the theme of a song at 4:17 and 4:22. There are intimations of echoes at 4:55, and the end of day approaches at 5:16. At 5:36 there is a final musical affirmation of life with the held chord holding sway. Performed on my vintage Galanti accordion, a cassotto instrument with very fine reeds and some special sonic attributes, all housed within a uniquely shaped, very ergonomically designed body. Feb 11, 2012 - @ImaLanger Wow, dear Mike, thank you for these very personal reflections which you have so generously shared in your very colorful and artistic review! You allow me to re-think anew what may have been in my mind and heart as I recorded this piece, kind of a new avenue of expression for someone who has loved impressionism for an entire lifetime. I remember being impressed with the music of Claude Debussy at a very early age, loving "La Mer" and "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun."

Feb 11, 2012 - @ImaLanger Dear Mike, I thank you for these noble words and monumentally uplifting comments, emanating from someone whom I truly admire and respect. The caliber of your own performances here at YT remains high on my list of favorites, whereupon one may favorably gauge the glory of the videos you have shared. You have allowed us to envision intangible things, of inestimable worth. Britten's work is sublime, esp, his Festival Cantata, Missa Brevis, Ceremony of Carols & St. Cecilia!

Feb 11, 2012 - @ImaLanger Dear Mike, these are some of the nicest compliments I have ever received on YT, words that touch my heart and nearly overwhelm my mind. It is a compelling mystery to me how I should wait almost 50 years before attempting to improvise such an impressionistic piece. But it never occurred to me until recently to pursue this kind of subject matter in earnest, a daunting task undertaken in uncharted territory by an elementary accordionist. I remember that place so vividly!

Feb 11, 2012 - @ImaLanger We shall miss your music noticeably, if you should desire to take a sabbatical for rest, travel and a temporary break from performance and recording. It is eminently understandable to seek a period of vacation from the limelight, whereupon the aim of restoration might be achieved. Frank Martin waited almost 40 years before allowing a 1963 performance of his Mass (1926), and Herbert Howells waited 44 years before releasing his Requiem (1936) in 1980. Conviction, indeed!

Feb 22, 2012 - Finally had the opportunity to listen in entirety. Thank you for transforming your beloved memories into new adventures for your audience. It's like blindfolding a trusting friend and leading them to a secret hiding place. PS. The allusion to "Frere Jacques" was well integrated to the rest of the theme and cleverly impressed the joys of childhood.

Feb 24, 2012 - Dear Lori, thank you for the positive review, filled with encouragement and sensitivity toward creative musical expression! One wonders at the gestational evolution for such themes and variations to occur within the musical mind, here especially at the lapse of time between 1965 and the present. I remember distinctly sitting on the ledge of the stone bridge which once crossed the meandering stream, looking either to the west or the south. It really was a wondrous place
