Simulation of dendritic growth in a cooling Al/Cu alloy. The volume plot shows the concentration of copper in the liquid phase. It starts at 2%, but increases around the crystal, as the aluminum solidifies first and the copper is driven out, creating a haze around the solid body. The model is courtesy of the department of Metallic Materials, FSU Jena ( http://www.matwi.uni-jena.de/metalle/englisch/index.htm ). The simulation itself was carried out with LibGeoDecomp ( http://www.libgeodecomp.org ). The visualization was rendered with VisIt.
