Feb 11, 2012 - It depends which xeons... On the LGA1366 platform, some of the 6 core xeons where the same as the 980x/990x, only that the max cpu config of the xeons are 2, but the i7 are only 1. Meaning that you can run 2 xeons together, but only 1 i7 at a time. That's why the xeons where for 1600$ and an i7 with the same specs is only 1000$ for an X edition, and only 500$ for the regular i7 (980 not 980X). So you are basically paying an extra 1000$ to be able to use 2 CPU's at once.

Feb 11, 2012 - Keep in mind that a 2500k will perform better in games than a 990X, and roughly 3% less than a 3960X in games. The reason for that is because 99% of games only utilize 2-4 cores. That is why the 2500k is basically still the "Best gaming CPU" there is, because even if you upgrade to an 3960x, that most you'll gain is like 3%, and that's not worth it.
