Debra Ann Pawlak has always been a movie lover and has always enjoyed writing about history so it's a natural that she would write "Bringing Up Oscar: The Story of the Men and Women Who Founded the Academy." In her book by Pegasus, Debra Ann Pawlak writes about these people who in 1927, were at the top of their game. They were successful directors, actors, producers, writers, and technicians who came together with one goal and that was they believed film to be the preeminent art form of the 20th century. Pawlak writes about this colorful group of people including an Alaskan gold miner, who failed to strike it rich, a bicycle shop owner, a junk dealer, one was even a self-proclaimed amateur anesthesiologist. Some came from money, some dirt poor and from all education levels. Yet, they all came to a common goal in mind. They all wanted to establish the Academy because they wanted to insure that the industry that they had built remained successful. In her book "Bringing Up Oscar, the Men and Women who Founded the Academy" Pawlak writes about Hollywood in the early days was a dusty small town with the only attractions being crops and livestock where pepper trees lined the streets. At the time the main street of Hollywood was Prospect Avenue and it had some Victorian-type homes that wealthy people had built so they could spend the winters in the mild climate of California. It would later be named Hollywood Blvd. Soon after on May 16th, 1929 the very first Academy Awards banquet was held in the Blossom Rood of the Roosevelt Hotel. Debra Ann Pawlak writes it was very low key. No glitz, no glamour, certainly no red carpet. It was a very quiet affair with one hour of dancing followed by dinner and then a total of 12 awards were handed out by Douglas Fairbanks, who was the Academy's first president. She writes there was no suspense, because the winners were announced 3-months before the first Academy Awards. Debra Ann Pawlak is on Facebook, Twitter and online writing new Hollywood trivia every day. Her book "Bringing Up Oscar, The Men and Women Who Founded the Academy is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books a Million or wherever books are sold.
