Father, You Adore Me

This is a song I just wrote yesterday. Actually, it's been a work in progress...I first took the classic worship song, "Father, I Adore You" and added another phrase to the chorus back in May of 2002. Then a couple weeks ago, God was really speaking to me about how much He loved us. I felt like I wanted to sing a song that focused more on His love for me, rather than just another song where I sing that I love Him. (Because let's face it, nothing competes with His love! He loved us first, which is why we can even imagine loving Him. His love is perfect, whereas ours is temporary, shallow, self-centered and half-hearted...and that's on a good day!) Also, I was not wanting to sing just about Him being a loving God, but more from a very personal perspective where we know that His love is directly aimed straight at us! So, almost by accident as I was thinking these things and looking for another song, my eyes saw the title of the old song, "Father, I Adore You" and immediately I knew I was supposed to reword the chorus to aim it at myself. But, once I started doing that I realized that the second line in the original 3-line chorus ("Lay my life before You") would have to be rewritten differently for each of the three persons of God named in the song, in order for it to be Scripturally accurate and not spin too many heads off their necks. :) Once I did that, the song really came alive in a new way to me because now, rather than just naming the 3 persons of God (Father, Jesus, Spirit as in the original song), it now points to their individual characteristics in a simple, yet deeper way. And by reworking the extra phrase that I had added back in 2002 to fit this new perspective (which now says, "You're the ONE who set me free!"), we now have a more complete view of the Trinity as ONE God, as well as, the 3 individual persons. Finally, yesterday as I was playing this new version of the chorus I strongly felt the Holy Spirit saying, "Write a verse!" And what came out surprised me in a couple ways. For one thing, the melody didn't seem to me like something I would normally write...it's hard to explain but, it sounds like someone else's voice to me. Not my singing, but the actual melody. Like something another person might write, but not me. But, what surprised me even more was the theme the lyrics took in the verse. I was not intentionally addressing the issue of "fear", but that's where I believe the Holy Spirit wanted to take the song. Even as I was singing and playing around with the lyrics and crafting the song, I wasn't sure why it kept circling around that topic. But, it felt right for some reason, so I kept going in that direction. That was yesterday afternoon...later tonight when I was playing the song for a friend to get his input the thought hit me so clearly and I don't know why I didn't see it before, because once I did it was so obvious. The reason God was having me sing about fear in a song that was originally about us loving Him was because He wanted to increase our understanding and grasp of 1 John 4:18 which says that "perfect love drives out fear". And originally the song sang of our love for God, but unfortunately that's not perfect love...which is why that song couldn't truly address the issue of fear. But, now that the song helps us sing about how much God loves us, which is the absolute epitome of perfect love...it can drive every fear out of our hearts!!! And that's my prayer for you and for this song; that it would be a simple yet strong reminder to you every time you feel afraid: God loves you PERFECTLY!!! He ADORES you endlessly! The Father ADORES you so much He was willing to give up Jesus for you! Jesus ADORES you so much He agreed with the Father and willingly laid His life down for you! Holy Spirit ADORES you so much He is overjoyed to comfort you and drive that fear away! I hope this song blesses you! Let me know if it does!
