Here are the steps how I modified an OEM Honda Express NC50 1981 muffler with a five inch piece of black pipe from the local hardware store. I gained 3 -5 MPH in the flats and the 33 - 34 MPH at the bottom of my favorite hill. Just drilling holes in the internal pipes is not the only answer to a speed gain. There are no popping sounds with this modification. This modification is the best subtle upgrade you can make for this bike for gaining a more even speed. This upgrade will take you above the 25 MPH design restriction in the stock muffler. One little change for a big gain with out spending big bucks. On my ride to work this morning the performed fantastic no problems to report. It gets a solid 28 - 30 MPH and does not struggle as much going up hills like it did with the stock muffler. In my next design I want to install a cone shape in place of the black pipe. I still think there is more to be gained with cone shapes. Power comes on faster and I used that gain today to merge into traffic. The extra 3 - 5 MPH has already made a difference in traffic. Also low speed riding has improved for beating traffic grid lock. I do not have the exact terminology perfected or a complete understanding about how 2 stroke pipes work. I do have design software to calculate the correct pipe design and I have spent considerable time studying 2 stroke pipe design theory. I struggle talking about it in the video. I suspect that if not to many changes are made to the stock pipe except to the pipe in the rear chamber there might be more speed gains. After two weeks of riding I'm pleased with the results. I pulled the plug and it looked fine. I did see 30 MPH in the flats today - I have been riding in 30F air but today it was 45F so the bike ran faster.
