A memorial for seven men who died in a tragic accident at sea on the eve of 27 December 2006.was unveild on Fleetwood seafront ,during a special service for their family, friends and rescue workers on Ist February 2012. The men were traveling in a helicopter taking them from gas rig platforms near the Morecambe Bay Coast..when it ditched into the water, just as it was about to land on one of the rigs. RNLI boats and RAF helicopters were scrambled to the scene to search for bodies, all seven men on board tragically died in the accident. The memorial was the idea of Sandra Potton , the wife of the helicopter pilot,Captain Stephen Potton.. Sandra from North Blackpool also met the cost of the memorial. RNLI boatmen from Fleetwood brought the bodies back to shore at Fleetwood,,which is why Sandra chose the spot for the memorial, close to the RNLI boathouse on the seafront.

Feb 8, 2012 - The RNLI is a charity that saves lives at sea, providing a 24 hour lifeboat search and rescue service . The RNLI first established a lifeboat station in 1859 on the beach at Fleetwood. The town was once a major fishing and gargo port,at one time employing over 9,000people. but since the 70s the fishing industry has declined. Today it is the industry of gas drilling and wind farms that now take men out to work in the sea.
