This is model #2 of Bad Kitty, my expedition racing folding biplane rigged catamaran. scale 1" = 1' . Here I show where the hinging is performed and a few different mast placements, both for storage and use. I'm still exploring the three main positions of mast placement and have a few other ideas. the platform is 3' wide, the hulls are 1.5' wide, so when folded the platform rides over top of the hulls for a 3' folded beam. In this version I extended the platform from 7 to 8 feet long to see if when folded the front of the platform is far enough forward to set a seadrive or spinfin peddle prop drive and still have room to have it function and fold up out of the way. I can also see that my side tramp wings when folded over top of the main platform fit . Presently the total beam is 10' and 3' side tramp wings would cover my hatch covers which will line the hull from bow to stern, at 2.5' the wings would work better when deployed out flat and I could still get to the hatches, but when folded up to the main tramp to form a cockpit it might be too short to use that way. a separate cockpit/tent might have to be made. I plan on sleeping on the boat most of the time unless I use a hammock for some really good sleep on shore when possible. In marshes, instead of an anchor I'll try out a spud pole like on dredges and bay fishing boats. Most of the time I could just pull up on shore and sleep on the platform with the cockpit/tent. This scale model shows me physical geometries that i wouldn't get from drawings and I can figure in ergonomics. Next I'll install the rope system for deploying the folding system, I got it worked out in my head but seeing it work on my model will help iron out the details.

Mar 1, 2012 - do you have any plans for this?

Mar 1, 2012 - No, I don't have plans for it, it is still in the development stage, hence the model you see. I didn't really design this for other applications other than my own but I do see where it would be desirable to have a folding cat. This is being designed and built specially as an expedition and adventure racing boat. For the hulls I'm looking at a modified F16 Razor which is not quite available yet, or possibly an A class (maybe shortened). What would you use a design like this for?
