Circle Jump Demonstration Portal 2

Just a very quick demonstration of a circle jump in Portal 2. I made the keys in Blender and manually animated everything so it might not be perfect. I wanted to make a slow motion part after this, but I don't know how to use computers so this is it. Also, there's no sound because I couldn't find a good 2 second song to accurately portray the emotions expressed in the demonstration. You could play your own if you have something in mind. PS if someone wants to see a full bunny hop with this same overlay I could do it. I just need to know if that's a thing that people actually want. PPS Oddly enough, there is a Wikipedia page that describes circle jumping (in quake at least -- the only difference is not holding foward in Portal 2): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strafe-jumping

Feb 9, 2012 - Nice, I like the cool format, but you preformed it kind of in a swiping motion and less of a "circle"

Feb 9, 2012 - to expand this to a tutorial would be awesome!!!

MrINFANTS Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - True, but when thinking of a circle jump it's better to think of the pattern made by your feet and not the mouse. I assume you meant my swiping mouse movement, but I could be very wrong. In any case, the reason you gain speed off of the jump is because turning is faster than simply walking straight. You can use this speed to your advantage by jumping during your turn. In retrospect, you could perform a circle jump with only the x-axis of view, it would just be unnatural.

TPLNPortal Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - Yes, That is true, but the fact that people trying to learn about circle jumping, and this being an x-axis swipe, might be mislead. This has the same affects as the circle mouse movement, but it's a little inconvenient for learners. But all the points you made were correct.

Feb 9, 2012 - Sorry, but you're wrong. This is the correct and only way to do a circle jump. The term circle is not to imply that you should move your mouse in an entire circle. To do so is obviously superfluous and wastes time, and makes the movement more confusing and difficult to aim. Think of it like this: when you throw a baseball, the path of travel of your arm would form a circle if you continued the movement instead of letting go of the ball and terminating the movement.

Portal2Cooperation Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - The same goes for a golf club swing (this is actually a common learning technique - form a complete half-circle instead of stopping at the ball), and the same goes for a circle jump. You are moving in such a way that is like a segment of a circle's circumference. It is to imply an angle and style of movement, but the actual execution of the technique is not an entire circle, but instead is exactly what he has shown in this video.

Portal2Cooperation Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - The only variation is personal preference and circumstantial benefit. You can execute a circle jump with a wider arc than shown in this video, and also with a shorter one. Sometimes you need to turn a corner quickly and you would use a quick circle jump. Sometimes you want max speed so you would really exaggerate the movement in order to get a full arc. But it will always be something very close to what's in this video. Never anywhere near a full circle.

Portal2Cooperation Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - Oh, and one thing I forgot to note - any y axis movement of the mouse during the execution of a circle jump is purely personal preference. I tend to start aiming down a bit because the resulting mouse movement just feels more comfortable to me, and having to move at a diagonal keeps my speed where I want it without getting the horizontal movement too out of control. Again, though, it will depend on preference (which will be influenced by mouse sensitivity and technique).

Feb 9, 2012 - I have been proven wrong. This is the way I circle jump, I was using what I had taken from Banana's videos like leaving the elevator to prove a point. I'm certainly not nearly as educated on the topic as either of you.

Feb 9, 2012 - Slow Mo?

Feb 9, 2012 - You created this very useful animation but you don't know how to use a computer? I'd say you do.

2012TunnelRat Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - Am I understanding this correctly: you stand 90 degrees from your intended direction, then flick the mouse *right before* you press the forward key?

2012TunnelRat Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - "PS if someone wants to see a full bunny hop with this same overlay I could do it. I just need to know if that's a thing that people actually want." Oh hell yes!

Feb 9, 2012 - deffineatly make a longer video were you bhop multiple times.

Blumenrocker Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - press the opposite strafe key immediately after jumping.

MrINFANTS Wypowiedź:

Feb 9, 2012 - Due to the overwhelming response of 2 or 3 commenters, I will be making a more elaborate video where I showcase more movement techniques and use text annotations to explain in more depth. The tutorial will be made on some rainy day when I have lots of time to press keys on my keyboard, probably in the next week or two.

Feb 9, 2012 - make it loop by using an annotation plez

LudicrousAndroid Wypowiedź:

May 17, 2012 - can you please make a longer and more in depth video about this?

MrINFANTS Wypowiedź:

May 17, 2012 - Yeah it'll happen, I'm just getting motivated to do this again so expect it in the next moth (this time I'm not lying.)

LudicrousAndroid Wypowiedź:

May 17, 2012 - its just I'm trying to become good at portal 2 speed running (not competitive, i just want the skills) and there are no tutorials for any good techniques. There are only 2. Both for bunnyhopping and neither were that clear to me. this tutorial could be very useful for me. Also, when making your second one, please open the console and type "cl_showpos 1" so i can see how fast you are supposed to go. Thanks :)
